Our Lady of the Angels Prep. School is a Registered Roman Catholic Independent School in Kingston. It was founded in the early 60’s by the Franciscan Fathers, Fr. Paul Walsh and Fr. Clement Healy, for the purpose of educating the young children of the less privileged families in Our Lady of the Angels Church Parish. On Sunday November 16, 1958, one day short of three weeks after the arrival of the Franciscan Fathers in Jamaica, Our Lady of The Angels Church (a former stable) at 75a Molynes Road was opened. In 1960 a new church was built and the ‘stable-shed’ at the back of the church. (the former church) was used to start O.L.A Prep. School in 1961. The school originated with the two above mentioned priests and, with an initial attendance of 30 children, headed by Miss Phyllis Beckno and assisted by Miss Jean Lyle. In 1961 the Fathers bought 78 Molynes Road and converted the then cottage into more classrooms which housed the Kindergarten and canteen. The first Sister to become Principal at 78 Molynes Road was Sr. Anecita who held the post for approximately two years between 1962-1964. In 1962 the two-storey block were built by the firm “Rema Jamaica Ltd.” Sr. Anne Martin became Principal in September 1964 and left in July 1969. During her term of office she converted an office room (which now houses the Catholic Doctrine classes), into a clinic which was run by trained volunteer nurses who also distributed vitamin pills and arranged for the testing of the children’s eyes. Sr. Marion Power arrived in September 1969 and remained Principal until July 1975 when she returned to the U.S.A. During her administration the school roadway and playfield were asphalted in 1974/75, in an effort to reduce the dust nuisance. A beautification park was also created between the new and old buildings.
